Southern Right

South Africa

Southern Right is a small Pinotage and Sauvignon blanc specialist located on a strikingly beautiful 448 hectare property in the cool, maritime, Hemel-en-Aarde Valley appellation, on the Western border of big sister winery Hamilton Russell, just behind the old fishing village of Hermanus. The wines are named after the rare Southern Right whales, which frequent the cool South Atlantic Walker Bay, 3 kilometres from the vineyards and with each bottle sold, Southern Right makes a contribution to Southern Right whale conservation. Founded by Anthony Hamilton Russell in 1994, “Southern Right's strong, cooling, maritime influence and extremely old and stony clay-rich soils, combined with our tight focus on only two wines, have enabled us to re-define South Africa's unique variety Pinotage with a more classically styled wine. Our lighter structured sandstone-derived soils combine with our clay-rich soils to produce a highly individual Sauvignon blanc, with marked minerality and complexity.” Anthony Hamilton Russell
