The company Pereira D'Oliveira (Vinhos) was founded in 1850, and is still in the hands of the founding family. It has however grown by acquisition and can trace its roots backto the 1820's. Its headquarters in Funchal dates to the 1600's. D'Oliveira is reported to produce 150,00 litres of wines per year, and produces a wide range of wines including Tinta Negra wines at 3.5 and 15 year old. D'Oliveira also produces Sercial Verdelho, Bual, Malmsey and Terrantez wines. wines marketed upto 10 years old are produced using the Estufagem process, wines marketed as 15 years old are produced using the Canteiro process of maturation.
Matured in wood for thirty years, the 1977 Terrantez was bottled in 2009. It has a lively bouquet that comes racing out of the blocks with dried honey, apricot, quince and marmelade aromas. The palate is very well-balanced with rapier-like acidity. It is harmonious an focused with resinous/oxidative elements neatly interwoven into the viscous, honeyed fruit, leaving the finish harmonious, long and satisfying.
Terrantez will pair with food, quite strong meaty foods such as consomme where a red wine would overwhelm and a white would not quite be right this Madeira wine will deal with cold cuts of meats especially cured hams and high quality pork pies, pates and foie gras as well as duck.
Strong cheeses can also be matched to Terrantez.
