This large estate, currently under the ownership of the Japanese whisky company Suntory, has had a long and often disappointing history, being broken up and left in disrepair for the majority of its life. Since Suntory took over in 1983, there has been massive investment and spectacular improvement and the estate is now making some great wines. Situated at the highest point in St Julien, and planted to 68% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Merlot, spread over 120 Ha's, it is one of the largest vineyards in the Medoc.

Château Lagrange

Always buy second wines in very good vintages, and this year is a definite for Fiefs de Lagrange. The second wine of Chateau Lagrange represents 65% of the total crop. Owned by Suntory, the winemaking team were instructed to make the best wine possible regardless of cost. They therefore downgraded more plots into this second wine, and by doing so improved both this and the 'grand vin'. With an average vine age of 35 years, the quality of grapes is exceptional. Rich and fruity, beautiful and charming tannins with an impressive structure that supports a super concentration of cassis
A lovely and charming 2009, showing the ripe rounded creamy fruit of the vintage. A good dark and dense colour is evident in the glass, with a good strong nose - seriously blackcurranty with a degree of graphite and sweetness in equal balance. The palate is rich, full and layered with complex notes of herbs, earth, black fruits, sweet vanilla and some spice. Long luxurious finish. Very worthy wine!
We really enjoyed this wine with lamb shanks in a port reduction. Also good with ripe cheese and even a spot of sausages and mash!
