Mitchell Wines

Jane and Andrew Mitchell run the winery on the Mitchell family property in the western hills of South Australia’s Clare Valley in the picturesque Sevenhill region. Andrew was born on the estate and after a brief foray into economics returned with Jane, a former nurse, to establish the winery in 1975. Their home and winery started life as an old sandstone apple store. The vineyard practices are ‘Old Style’ farming with minimal intervention, no chemicals, no irrigation and biodynamic treatments. There are four vineyards at an altitude of between 300 and 450 meters, the vines age between 5 and 50 years old. Today they are joined by their son Angus.
A deep bright inky crimson red, the nose shows fragrant, ripe berry flavours lifted by dusty exotic spicy notes. There is generous complex fruit flavour on the front palate, leading seamlessly through to a very dry firm tannin finish.
Perfectly paired with barbecued foods, richly flavoured meats and game birds.
Our Peppertree Vineyard Shiraz has a component of whole bunch fermentation which gives a wonderful lifted perfume to the wine and helps with the tannin structure. The Shiraz is estate bottled after 18 months in French oak barrels
