Angostura aromatic bitters was first made in 1824 in the town of Angostura, Venezuela. Angostura aromatic bitters may be distinguished from all other aromatic bitters by its fine flavour and aromatic odour.

House of Angostura

The House of Angostura is a Trinidad and Tobago company famous for the production of angostura bitters invented by the company's founder. The company was founded around 1830 in the Venezuelan town of Angostura by a German doctor Johann Gottlieb Benjamin Siegert Surgeon-General in Simon Bolivar's army in Venezuela. Around 1820 he tried to find a medicine to improve appetite and digestive well-being of the soldiers. Researching and analysing the qualities of tropical herbs and plants he finally arrived at a unique blend of herbs in 1824 which he called "Amargo Aromatico" or aromatic bitters. Dark reddish brown, fairly thin and free flowing compared to some bitters. Quite aromatic, if not as complex as some bitters. Primary tastes are clove, gentian, cinnamon, angelica root, quinine alkali notes. Finish is medium-length.
Because of its delightful flavour and aroma it has become extremely popular for use in soft drinks, cocktails and other alcoholic beverages. It also is a great flavour addition to food! Try it in soups, salads, preserved fruits, jellies, sherbets, ice-cream and many more!
