Tenuta San Guido
Often truly great wine is the result of a singular vision and a tireless striving for perfection in one direction alone. What makes this estate interesting and inspiring is the fact that Nicolò has many interests, not least among them the breeding of racehorses, the ongoing support and maintenance of a wildlife preserve along the Maremma coast and collaboration with a Sardinian wine estate, Agricola Punica. It is perhaps this broader perspective that keeps the “superstar” more human than some of his peers in the wine world. The estate covers over 5000 acres, of which some 150 are planted with vines, in the gently rolling hills above the coast in the region surrounding the ancient village of Bolgheri and came under Nicolo’s control via his mother Clarice Della Gheradesca, whose family had owned land in the area since the 1800s.
A voluptuous nose charged with blackcurrant, black cherries, damson notes is rained in by mineral, almost balsamic hints of black olive, mint, tomato leaf and fresh black pepper. The exuberant nose of youth shouldn’t distract from the assertive and confident backbone that is clearly evident when the wine had time to open up in the glass.
Enjoy with ribeye steak!
