Wines from Adelaide Hills

This small yet important wine region lies to the east of Adelaide, founded as early as the 1840's rises up into the hills and valleys that overlook the city and is crowned by the imposing Mount Lofty. Known for its wide variety of cooler meso climates, and varied soils, it has grown rapidly from an adjunct of South Australian wine, to become a sought after region amongst winemakers escaping the heat and arid conditions that are now a feature of the Barossa and McLaren Vale, winemakers now making crisp, precise, almost European-style red and whites that feature freshness at their very core.

Chardonnay is almost Burgundian deft and focused, and Sauvignon Blanc, often a disappointment in the hotter areas of Australia, here it makes a pea pod and asparagus fruit undertone that meshes perfectly with the bright acidity. Riesling is in its element in the Adelaide Hills -  all crisp-citrus, petrol-headed and rapier-like, whilst the reds feature strongly with fragrant elegant Pinot Noir and Medoc-like Cabernet and Merlot.
