The Wine Classifications of Bordeaux

It has always been a treat to indulge in the history of French wine regions, as the history of Bordeaux and how it came to be is a captivating read. The ability to track a timeline of the global super-powers over the past 2000 years through the birth, investment, growth and shaping of the region has a beautiful and fascinating transparency to it.

First famous for its sweet wines, and then for its lightly coloured red wines, or ‘Clairette’, it wasn’t actually until as late as the mid 1800’s that the region became known for its powerful age worthy reds of such class and luxury.

Above the many intricacies of the French appellations, regional quality gradings and labelling systems, sits the defining impetus to the Bordeaux fortune – the Bordeaux classification system, notably the 1855 Medoc and Graves Classification. Rich in its history and prestige, it is perhaps one of the longest standing, upheld and broadly accurate classifications that there is.

The 1855 Medoc and Graves Classification

The significant moment of this transformation was an official decree that classified the top producers of the day. It was instigated by the Emperor Napoleon III, who wanted to showcase these wines at the Exposition Universelle de Paris, a kind of world fair, in 1855. Upon a request to the Chamber of Commerce, Brokers from the wine industry ranked the wines according to a chateau's reputation and trading price. The classification, now aptly named the ‘1855 Classification’, identified these Châteaux on a ranking of 1–5, known as the ‘Grand Cru Classé', all on the left bank within the Medoc & Graves. Wines such as Petrus, Cheval Blanc and other illustrious wines from Pomerol and St. Emilion of the right bank, were either not yet producing wine, or they were still considered fairly basic.

The only amendment to the 1855 Bordeaux Classification since then, has been Chateau Mouton- Rothschild, which was bumped up to a First Growth in 1973…a fairly controversial move.

Alongside Chateau Mouton Rothschild there are four more First Growths;

• Château Lafite, now Château Lafite Rothschild of Pauillac
• Château Latour, Pauillac
• Château Margaux, Margaux
• Haut-Brion, now Château Haut-Brion, Pessac, Graves

With regards to the second, third, fourth and fifth growths of the Bordeaux classification system, there are 61 in total. This breaks down to 5 First Growths, 14 Second Growths, 14 Third Growths, 10 Fourth Growths and 18 Fifth Growth Bordeaux wines.

The 1855 Sauternes and Barsac Classification

Alongside the 1855 Bordeaux Classification of the Medoc and Graves comes various other classifications. At the same Exposition Universelle de Paris came the creation of the Classification of Sauternes and Barsac, a slightly lesser known system, and perhaps over-looked today. Though it was quite significant back then. Using the same methodology, they were put into quality tiers of Classed Growths. In this case there are only two tiers, First and Second Growths, with 21 estates included. Oh… and also the creation of a super category of 'Superior First Growth' for the famed Château d'Yquem.

Cru Bourgeois Classification (last updated 2008)

The Cru Bourgeois Classification was created in 1932, following the gloomy market conditions of the post-war and post-depression years. It seemed to be an answer to the lesser known Châteaux in the Medoc that produced excellent quality wines of typicity, but struggled with the recognition and grandeur of their finer aristocratic cousins. Although it was never really endorsed by the Ministry of Agriculture, it provides good guidance to consumers through the maze of the thousand or so Petits Châteaux. The original 1932 classification designated 444 Châteaux, however over the years many have disappeared, been absorbed by other Châteaux or simply converted to other means of income. Since then, the structure of this system has been subject to some change, and after much confusion following the 2003 amendments, the system stands that; to be awarded ‘Cru Bourgeois’, Châteaux must abide by certain production rules and quality standards, and they must submit their wines each year to be judged in a blind tasting.

The 1955 St Emilion Classification (last updated 2012)

I have always found the St.Emilion grading to be somewhat misleading, as ‘Grand Cru’ actually sits at the bottom of the quality table in this system. With respect to how this system works, unlike the 1855 classification of the Medoc and Graves, Châteaux have to apply for inclusion and are assessed by a tasting of their wines from the past ten vintages. This classification bunches the best wines into 2 categories: 'Premier Grand Cru Classé' (which is sub-divided into tiers, 'A' and 'B'), and the less prestigious 'Grand Cru Classé'.

Premier Grand Cru Classé A’s are Château Ausone, Château Cheval Blanc, Château Angélus and Château Pavie. In total there are 18 Premiers Grands Crus Classés (A & B) and 64 Grands Crus Classés.

The 1959 Graves Classification

The Classification of Graves wineries are not ranked as First Growth, Second Growth, and so on. They are simply entitled to use the term Grand Cru Classé de Graves. Châteaux were classified for their white wine only, their red wine only, or both. As a result, 23 wines from 16 wineries of the Graves district were granted the title of Classified Growth in 1959: 7 Crus classés red, 3 Crus classés white, 6 Crus classés both for red and white.

The ‘Cru Artisans’ Classification 2006

This classification is purely for a group of 44 small family run estates found in all appellations across the Médoc peninsula who cultivate, make, market and sell their own grapes. It is term that has been loosely used for over 150 years, but had almost disappeared in the 1930’s. After over 15 years of lobbying, in January 2006 the Union of Médoc Cru Artisans succeeded in obtaining official recognition for a classification. This classification is intended to be renewed every 10 years and there are rules in place to ensure consistency and quality.

 

Note: All the Châteaux that are ranked sit with in their greater respective communal AOC’s, or ‘appellations’- Paulliac, St. Estephe, Margaux etc. The initial birth of the Bordeaux appellation system didn’t actually begin in earnest until 1936. It was created by the French Government and ingrained in legislation as a sort of protective measure to guarantee provenance amongst the high degree of fraudulence and duplicity of the time. Since then, selected areas are granted an official status, based on the quality and characteristic of the wine that is produced from the unique terroir of that area. These Chateaux must abide by strict rules and regulations as to adhere to the quality standards.
