Felton Road

Owner, Nigel Greening along with Winemaker Blair Walters and viticulturist Gareth King have established Felton Road into one of the world’s iconic producers of Pinot Noir. Writer James Suckling goes as far as describing Felton Road as the “DRC of New Zealand”. Beginning with meticulous site selection and vineyard design which started in 1991, Felton Road's story is one of refusal to compromise. A strict 100% estate policy with f...

A classic Felton Road nose of dark florals, rose and maybe violet, with cherry compote. Textural and rich on the first attack, with a fine line of berry leaves, raspberry or boysenberry, but right through the palate there is a clear sense of tension that prevents this from ever being fruit driven. The wine has a lovely persistence with fine and dusty tannins, leaving a line of pure fruit and petals, as it eventually fades.
This wine is fermented with 20% whole clusters and aged for 13 months in French oak, of which 20% is new.

The Wine Front, 95 points: "A blend of Cornish Point, Calvert, MacMuirand The Elms. In it’s own way, this is kind of like a Barolo classicowith its blend of vineyards. I like that Felton Road name the viticulturalist before the winemaker in their credits. A distinct dried rose perfume here along with rosemary and dried herbs, cherry and raspberry, baking spices and aniseed. It’s medium-bodied, a juicy and sweet attack of fruit, tempered by some more earthy and autumnal things, a fine-grained powdery grip to tannin, a sappy feel too, with some blood orange on a spicy finish of excellent length. A lovely and energetic wine. It drinks well now, though no hurry, and that perfume is quite something. Again, the best Felton Road Bannockburn I’ve tasted, or so I think."
