Nerello Mascalese is one of the two variants of the full-bodied red grape Nerello from Sicily and Sardinia. Used mostly for wine making, Nerello Mascalese makes excellent varietal wines, although it is sometimes used for blending purposes, including in Messina in northeast Sicily, where it is mixed with Nerello Cappuccio and local red grape Acitana. Due to the volcanic soils of Mount Etna, the grape has an intense and full flavour, with many Nerello Mascalese wines having few floral notes and a full body and rich texture.
