Wines from Valdeorras

Close to Rias Baixas, the Valdeorras DO is the most inland wine region of Galicia in North West Spain. Nicknamed ‘the Gateway to Galicia’, vines have been grown in the region for hundreds of years, though it only became officially recognised as a region in 1957. The climate is warm, though in winter months, temperatures can drop as low as 1°C. However, in summer the weather is mostly hot and dry, with most of the region’s 35 annual inches of rainfall coming in late autumn and winter. The region’s most popular grape is Verdelho, making sweet white wines with a dry texture.
