Wines from Côtes du Luberon

The Luberon, squeezed between Ventoux in the Rhône and Provence to the East, lies approximately 35 miles from the Mediterranean and benefits slightly from its cooling breezes. Planted on limestone and schist soils and using mainly Grenache and Syrah with smaller amounts of Mourvèdre and Carignan for reds, this Appellation also makes large quantities of crisply dry rose and small amounts of white. The red wines are rich, smoky and peppery, have good colour and richness and age well. An unusual feature of this region is the cooler nights which add complexity and freshness to both rose and white wines.
