Aberlour Distillery

Aberlour single malt whisky is named after it’s origin. Aberlour means ‘the mouth of the chattering burn’ in Gaelic and this wild mountain stream is part of the Aberlour story. Cascading down over mossy waterfalls and through wooded glens its constant chatter can be heard as it flows past the distillery to join the Spey at Aberlour. The spot where these waters meet has attracted human settlement since the Stone Age. Its mystical significance dates back thousands of years. Believing the water to have healing powers the druid priests of the ancient Celts were probably the first to use it for distilling alcohol for the elixirs they dispensed in their ‘hospital’ at Aberlour. Nature worshippers, they heard voices in the sound of the burn and built a shrine on Fairy Hill behind today’s distillery to commune with the talking spirits. This was unruly magic. Later in the 6th century the Lour may have been celebrated with a different kind of reverence. The history books tell us that a prince named Drostán sailed with his disciples to the Highlands on a mission to bring Christianity to the Celts. An influential preacher he was eventually declared a saint for the many souls he cleansed and saved.
