The region of Chinon, situated astride the river Vienne as it flows north west toward the mighty Loire, is named after the central town around which the serried vineyards sit. The soil is rockier, with more limestone and less loam, and the climate has a little more Continental influence as the river Vienne retains heat. The dominant grape is Cabernet Franc, but there is up to 25% Cabernet Sauvignon permitted. The style of wine is richer, denser and more robust than Bourgeuil, and shows rustic tannins throughout its life, softening with age but retaining a spicy edge.
