Washington State
The third and northernmost of the Western States, Washington makes a wide range of wines, due to the large number of different grape types grown in the area. With several sub-regions and AVAs, the climate, landscape and terroir can differ greatly in Washington. Areas like the Columbia Valley, for example, have a warm, continental climate due to the rain shadow created by the Cascade Mountain range. However, areas like Puget Sound in the west, nearer to Olympia and Seattle, have cooler, wetter climates.
