Situated in the north-east corner of Spain, Catalonia lies near to the Pyrenees, looking out into the Mediterranean Sea. Because of its location, the climate is unsurprisingly Mediterranean and quite similar to the weather in places like Italy’s Sorrentine Peninsula, which is also ideal for growing grapes and other fruits. Catalonia’s close proximity to France is evident in the wines it produces, both in grape type and also style – the region is famous for its Cava, and also its Carignan, Grenache and Shiraz wines are similar to those made near to Montpellier in the south of France.
