Glen Carlou

Established in 1985, Glen Carlou is a relatively young estate which has built an enviable reputation as one of South Africa’s leading producers. (Glen Carlou Wine). From its perch at the foot of the Simonsberg Mountains in the cooler southern corner of the typically hot Paarl region (roughly 45 minutes from Cape Town), Glen Carlou private cellar has continued to do what it’s done best since its inaugural vintage in 1988: make delicious, balanced Chardonnays as ideal for easy drinking as they are for food pairing. “We’ve never made heavy, oaky, buttery Chardonnays, the kind that needs three glasses of water to offset every glass of wine,” Arco Laarman, winemaker since 2000. insists, “and because of that, our Classic-style has become the go-to Chardonnay in South Africa; people know that there’ll be a certain kind of consistency.” A statement that’s well supported by a litany of awards

Tasting Notes

Light straw with a green tint. Toasty upfront, the bouquet brimming with scents of wood-grilled apple, mealy melon and lemon custard. The palate follows suit, with forward toast and ripe-fruit flavors that are partnered with just enough vibrant acidity to keep the decadence in check.

Food Matches

Skewered Shrimp and Ham with Apple Jelly.
