Pommard Village 2018, Domaine Voillot

POMM205
Jean Pierre Charlot, son-in-law of the founder Joseph Voillot. has now passed on the running of the family domaine to his nephew, Etienne Chaix. This exceptional domaine’s future is now secure. The domaine consists of 9ha of vineyards, including some prized sites in several 1er Crus. The grapes are partially destemmed and the wines matured in oak barrels (15-20% new) for 14-16 months. Without doubt one of the finest domaines in Volnay, these wines are never heavy or over extracted. They offer the fragrance, charm and beauty so typical of Volnay. “I am very satisfied with this vintage!” said Etienne Chaix with a mischievous grin. A true master of the understatement!

Domaine Joseph Voillot

This domaine has been producing wine now for five generations, but it is since the present owner, Jean Pierre Charlot, son-in-law of Joseph Voillot, took control that it has moved into the league of serious wine producers. The domaine consists of 10ha of vineyards, with holdings in the top vineyards of both Volnay and Pommard, including some prized sites in several 1er Crus. The grapes are partially destemmed and the wines matured in oak barrels (20-35% new) for 12-18 months.

Tasting Notes

Produced from four parcels—Cras, Poisots, Saussilles and Vaumuriens, totaling 1.2 ha, with the vines averaging 56 years old. It is great to see the difference in appellation showing so clearly. Tighter and more masculine in style, with a lovely, chunky rich palate of crunchy black fruits and grippy tannins. There is an impressive underbelly of richness that gives the wine added lift.

Food Matches

Try with roast duck with redcurrant jus, seasonal greens and chive butter potatoes.
