"Nero d'Avola" is the most important red wine grape in Sicily and is one of Italy's most important indigenous varieties. It is named after Avola in the far south of Sicily. It is frequently compared with New World Shiraz wines due to its sweet tannins and plum or peppery flavours, and this corking red has all that and more. Top-notch full bodied and creamy-lush spicy red - powerful and yet utterly captivating.

The Wine People

We have worked with Stefan Girelli for over 25 years, a relationship that has yielded many exceptional wines, from everyday drinking to fine Chianti estate wines. In 2009 Stefano established a new business called ‘The Wine People’ in partnership with Frenchman, Philippe Marx, and Dutchman Peter Kosten. They have combined their skill and experience to bring affordable good value wines from across Italy, with the help of renowned Italian winemaker Stefano Chioccioli who makes all the wines. (Please look separately for the superb Chiantis from Chioccioli.)

Intense and smooth red wine, full of ripe red berry ( sweet cherrry, baked plum, damson and raspberry coulis ) aromas and flavours supported by soft tannins.
An ideal accompaniment to any tomato based pasta dishes or red meat. Or, perhaps try with Parmigiana aubergines.
Harvest normally takes place between the second part of September and early October. The grapes are destemmed and gently pressed. With the addition of selected yeasts, fermentation takes place at controlled temperatures not exceeding 28°C. Frequent pumping over takes place in the early stages of fermentation in order to ensure optimum colour extraction and soft tannins. After fermentation, the wine is racked and the malolactic fermentation takes place in order to obtain perfect balance and harmony.

Victoria Moore, Telegraph March 2022, “It's still possible to find good wines for less than £10 – here are 50 of the best”: “Nero d’Avola is a Sicilian speciality that makes beautiful, medium-bodied, juicy reds like this one, all red plums and mulberries, with a twist of sour cherry”
