D'Oliveira

The company Pereira D'Oliveira (Vinhos) was founded in 1850, and is still in the hands of the founding family. It has however grown by acquisition and can trace its roots backto the 1820's. Its headquarters in Funchal dates to the 1600's. D'Oliveira is reported to produce 150,00 litres of wines per year, and produces a wide range of wines including Tinta Negra wines at 3.5 and 15 year old. D'Oliveira also produces Sercial Verdelho, Bual, Malmsey and Terrantez wines. wines marketed upto 10 years old are produced using the Estufagem process, wines marketed as 15 years old are produced using the Canteiro process of maturation.

Tasting Notes

A fine and balanced nose with intense fruits, smokiness and distinct nuttiness. The palate is clean and well rounded with a wonderfully bright and clean acidity. Complex and satisfying.

Food Matches

Verdelho can be served as an aperitif – lightly chilled and as such accompanies savoury appertisers very well indeed. It is particularly well paired with sesame and bread sticks. With strong cheese and pickles Verdelho wine will accompany richer cheeses exceptionally well, and the stronger and more smelly cheeses such as blue cheeses and Stilton, Camembert and ripe Brie. The wine is robust enough to accompany chutneys and other such sweet and sour preserves. Typical Portuguese cheeses to accompany Verdelho would be Azeitão; Serra de Estrella and Amarelo de Beira Baixa Verdelho is also excellent when served with fresh fruit such as apples and grapes.
