Tenuta San Guido
Often truly great wine is the result of a singular vision and a tireless striving for perfection in one direction alone. What makes this estate interesting and inspiring is the fact that Nicolò has many interests, not least among them the breeding of racehorses, the ongoing support and maintenance of a wildlife preserve along the Maremma coast and collaboration with a Sardinian wine estate, Agricola Punica. It is perhaps this broader perspective that keeps the “superstar” more human than some of his peers in the wine world. The estate covers over 5000 acres, of which some 150 are planted with vines, in the gently rolling hills above the coast in the region surrounding the ancient village of Bolgheri and came under Nicolo’s control via his mother Clarice Della Gheradesca, whose family had owned land in the area since the 1800s.
This wine is showing exceptionally well in this classic vintage. The 2016 Guidalberto (Cabernet Sauvignon and a smaller percentage of Merlot) opens to a full and generous bouquet and a beautifully rich and velvety appearance. This edition of Tenuta San Guido's mid-level wine offers a bigger aromatic profile, more texture and more volume as well. Dark cherry and blackberry segue to spice, tar, leather and sweet fruit at the end. The mouthfeel is elegantly shaped, silky and nuanced.
Enjoy with ribeye steak!
