Meet the Team:

Stuart Shenton - Cellar Door Manager

Stuart joined The House of Townend in November 2010 to head up the development of the Cellar Door Wine Shop. After University Stuart joined Oddbins Wine Merchants as a wine advisor and was bitten by the wine bug. He spent 9 years with Oddbins running a series of branches in West Yorkshire, Glasgow & Edinburgh as well as being a Sales & Account Manager for Scotland & Northern England. After leaving Oddbins Stuart spent time working for a specialist wine & beer importer based in Manchester.

We asked Stuart to give us his thoughts on the Cellar Door – “ I can’t believe it’s been over a year since we opened. In that time we have achieved so much and held some fabulous events. The shop has begun to establish itself as a key part of House of Townend and I want to continue to grow & develop the shop to become one of the leading wine shops in the region and in the country. In 2011 we were awarded in the International Wine Challenge Regional Wine Merchant of the Year. This was a fantastic achievement after only being open for such a short time. It helped to vindicate the effort we have put in to get the shop to the level we want it to be at with both the range & customer service. This year we will continue to bring in new wines & small parcels wherever we can. We unearthed some real gems last year, which we originally brought in as parcels, which have gone on to establish them as a key part of our range. We hope to continue that trend and I have been very excited by the South American wines we have added as well as some great parcels from the South of France. We always have loads of wines on tasting so pop down to the Cellar Door for a chat & a taste.

Victoria Batty - Cellar Door Assistant Manager

Like Stuart, Vicky spent her formative wine years working at Oddbins. After studying History at University Vicky went on to join Majestic Wines initially and then joined Oddbins. She spent time working in the Northeast & then became Assistant Manager in York and then went on to Manage in York & Wetherby. Vicky has fantastic product knowledge and achieved a Merit in her WSET advanced examinations. Vicky loves tasting and trying wines from all over the world & is heavily involved in all the tasting events at the Cellar Door. Her true passion is for the wines of Italy having travelled there. Vicky explains what drew her to Italy. “I had the opportunity to visit Italy in 2004 and spent time in Venice, Tuscany, & Marche. Whilst I was there I tasted and tried some of the best wines I have ever tasted. On my return I set about tasting as many Italian Wines as I could and decided to learn the language. Since joining the Cellar Door I have been steadily working my way through the range. It’s a tough job, but someone has to do it.”

Michael Rowe - Cellar Door Wine Advisor

Mike is our newest team member here at the Cellar Door. He joined in April 2012 and brings a wealth of wine knowledge from his time in Oddbins. Mike worked in Notting Hill for many years and has studied wines up to WSET diploma level. He has a love for many different styles and grapes but his main passion is South Africa, & Alsace.

Tasting at the Cellar Door

When the shop opened we want to give customers the chance to try & taste wines before they buy. Whether its for a nice easy drinking mid-week wine, a special bottle for that fillet steak or your having a party for 200, choosing the right wine can be tough. To make that choice easier we have installed a Pod Bar tasting system. It comprises of four different Fridge units that are each set to the correct temperature for the wines in that fridge, be they red or white. Once we open a wine we have a special stopper, which is inserted, back into the open bottle and then have a device that takes the air out of the bottle. It’s similar to the old Verre de Vin hand pump units but this takes the exact amount of air out of the bottle in order to preserve it. This enables us to have many wines open at one time and give you the chance to taste wines against each other. Stuart, Vicky & Mike are always on hand to offer advice and help you through the tastings. The wines get updates every week so if you want to know what’s on tasting this week please give the Cellar Door team a call or pop in.

Cellar Door Events

By its definition the Cellar Door is a place to come and buy great wines. But as with the Cellar Doors from across the wine world that we took our inspiration from we wanted to have a great area for tasting & learning about wine as well as whipping up some fantastic food to go with those wines. So we built a fantastic tasting area. We host a series of events from intimate dinners around our legendary wine table to our seasonal portfolio tastings with upwards of 100 people in attendance. The tastings are devised by Stuart & Vicky. They focus on selected countries, grape varieties, producers and styles. Stuart talks about putting on an event, “Both myself and Vicky love the events side of the shop. It gives us the chance to do what we both love doing best, tasting wine and engaging our customers about the wines on that evening. We recently did an Amazing Australia tasting featuring wines from some boutique wineries in Oz and they were fantastic. The aim is get people tasting wines they might not ordinarily try and give them information about the grape, the region and the producer. We want to make the evenings relaxed and informal but keep the content informative. If you want to come to one of the events please click the link to take you to our current events calendar.

If you would like to be kept informed of these events please join our mailing list or follow this link for a list of forthcoming events

Private and Corporate Events

Our Cellar Door, wine school and cookery theatre will be available for private bookings, tastings, dinners and other related events.  For further information please contact Stuart Shenton at the Cellar Door.

Cellar Door Offers

Throughout the year we run numerous special offers on selected wines. We pride ourselves on offering great value for money on our entire range and always offer a fair price. The idea is to have real value in the products we sell. So often the wine world is dominated by supermarket, “fake deals” where a wine you have never seen or heard of suddenly is on offer reduced from £10 to £5. The simple fact is the wine is only worth £5 at best. At the Cellar Door we have a clear pricing policy. If you pay £5.99 for a bottle of wine you will get a great wine that’s worth £5.99. In and amongst the great value wines we have a series of fantastic offers, which are updated regularly. We work with the various different wineries and suppliers to always be able to offer great deals on Champagne & table wine. As well as this we have a continually changing range of Bin-end wines in the shop so there are always some great individual bargains to be had.
